Most Commonly Asked Questions
At what age should I schedule an appointment for an orthodontic screening?
Most international orthodontic associations recommend that children be evaluated for treatment between the ages of 7 and 9 years old. A percentage of those patients will benefit from early treatment. Others will be placed on a 6 - 12 month recall program until they are ready to undergo treatment when their second set of molars appear. At Kharsa Clinics, we help families make critical, timely decisions for excellent long-term results.
What is Phase 1 (early) Treatment?
If needed, Phase 1 orthodontic treatment starts between the age of 7 and 9 years old when children begin to lose their baby teeth and present with a mix of primary and permanent teeth.
What kind of problems can Phase 1 treatment address?
Phase 1 treatment is designed to guide the growth and development of a child’s teeth and jaws, helping to prevent more serious issues in the future. It can address concerns such as crowding, ensuring there is enough space for permanent teeth to come in properly. It also supports healthy jaw development, which can improve bite alignment and prevent crossbites. Additionally, Phase 1 treatment can help correct harmful habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, which may impact dental and facial development. In some cases, it is used to manage congenital issues such as missing teeth or facial conditions like cleft lip and palate. Children experiencing difficulties with breathing, sleep disorders, or TMJ dysfunction may also benefit from early intervention. By addressing these concerns early, Phase 1 treatment can promote better long-term oral health and overall well-being.
Can a child with baby teeth have orthodontic treatment?
Interceptive orthodontic appliances are designed to fit on primary and mixed dentition to achieve the treatment goals.
Will my child need full braces if they have Phase 1 treatment?
Some children never need additional treatment, but many do. Our specialists can offer insight when they evaluate your child.
Are appliances and materials used in your practice approved by international health authorities?
All materials and appliances used in our practice are certified by the FDA, European health authority, and the Saudi FDA (SFDA). They are for one-time use and sterilized to the highest standards.
